New HMRC Rules for UK Cryptoasset Service Providers coming Jan26
From 1 January 2026, anyone using crypto-asset services must provide specific personal or business details to the service provider so that that HMRC can accurately link crypto transactions to tax records. Crypto-asset services include exchanges, wallet apps, NFT marketplaces and portfolio managers.
For individuals:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Residential address and country of residence
- Tax identification number: in the UK, this could be your National Insurance number or Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
- If you live outside the UK and don’t have a tax ID, it’s not required
For entities (e.g., companies, trusts, charities):
- Legal business name
- Main business address
- UK company registration number, if applicable
- Overseas firms need to provide their tax identification number and issuing country
- Some entities may also need to include details of their controlling person
These details must be given to every crypto-asset service provider, regardless of whether the provider is UK-based or not. The information is mandatory and must be accurate, failure to provide or providing incorrect information could lead to a penalty of up to £300.
